How the calculation works
EPA + DHA in bottle (g) = servings × (EPA mg + DHA mg) ÷ 1,000; cost per g = price ÷ total g
A worked example
A $24 bottle with 60 servings of 180 mg EPA and 120 mg DHA contains 18 g EPA plus DHA. Its cost is about $1.33 per gram, regardless of the total fish oil weight.
The front label can count all the oil
Total fish oil and EPA plus DHA are different quantities. Use the separately listed EPA and DHA amounts for the same serving. If the manufacturer does not disclose them, this comparison cannot be calculated reliably.
Common questions
Is 1,000 mg fish oil the same as 1,000 mg EPA and DHA?
No. Fish oil includes other components. Add the EPA and DHA amounts on the facts panel to find the amount used by this calculator.
Does this work for algal oil?
Yes. Enter the labelled EPA and DHA per serving. If the product has only DHA, enter zero for EPA. Their combined amount must be greater than zero.
